Tamás Berki, mission leader
My name is Tamás Berki, I was born in Ózd and I am a father of three. I have spent most of my life in Budapest, where I currently live, although during my childhood, my family and I lived in Ózd. We moved from Ózd to Budapest when I was 13 years old.
Like many others, I also tried to find happiness and joy in different ways and through various paths — including things that ended up harming both myself and those around me. But thankfully, a turning point came in my life: I came to know God and Jesus Christ — whom I hadn't known before. I didn't even know that God had a Son.
It was through an evangelistic event that I invited Jesus Christ into my life. That was more than 20 years ago. Since then, I made a commitment to follow only His path and go wherever He leads me.
I returned to Ózd after a desire was awakened in the hearts of several of us—to go and evangelize in our hometown, among people living in poverty. This desire was first placed in the heart of my brother, and then several of us joined him. We began praying and asking the Lord to show us His plan—how we should go, how we should encourage people, and what message we should bring. We were seeking God's will. In response, we received a clear YES from the Lord: this was indeed His desire.
So we began to travel regularly to Ózd, with a group of 5–6 Christian brothers and sisters. We looked for those who were in the greatest need of God, those living in the poorest conditions. We wanted to serve where the need was the greatest.
In the beginning, we went almost door to door, from family to family, asking if we could come in, talk, and pray with them. People welcomed us, and as time went on, our mission field began to grow. The mission started to take shape, and we began to understand what we were called to do in this ministry.
We held street evangelism events, sharing the Good News with people passing by—proclaiming that there is salvation in Christ, that there is another way, and that everyone has the choice to choose what is good. We preached Christ.
Later, we were given space in the Roman Catholic parish building on Ív Street. Father Ferenc welcomed us and provided a place where we could hold our gatherings and meet with the local community. Our meetings became more and more regular.
Alongside this, we also organized food and clothing distributions, which were always combined with the preaching of the Gospel and worship. Our vision is firmly rooted in the principle that we never do anything without sharing the Good News—without proclaiming the Word of God.
